Mystery Rosy Slime on Remote Tasmanian Beach Raises Concerns of Potential Algal Bloom
Officials in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has materialized on a isolated coast, with some scientists concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
Widespread Appearance On Beaches
The magenta-hued slime appeared along a stretch of a southern bay about 60km south of the city. A comparable ooze has also been documented on sections of Little Roaring Beach and an additional coastal site.
Specimens Gathered for Testing
Specimens have been taken and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A representative commented that "algae outbreaks are a natural occurrence in reaction to shifts in food sources, heat, rain or sunlight".
"These blooms are at times called crimson or rosy tides because the outbreaks can turn the water reddish," the spokesperson added. "Not all phytoplankton events are toxic, with numerous types functioning as a major source of food for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The most common cause of crimson tides in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."
Increasing Rate Linked to Global Warming
Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their frequency has risen in recent years, partially due to global warming and pollution that combine to create nutrient-rich waters geared for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that usually function as the ocean's waste processors. During a bloom, there is a quick expansion in their numbers that interferes with the proper operation of marine environments.
These occurrences have been likened to marine infernos and can continue to grow as long as circumstances are favorable. In severe cases, vulnerable aquatic environments can be devastated as marine life is eliminated or suffocated, providing more food for the outbreak.
Past Catastrophic Event in South Australia
A southern state not long ago dealt with a catastrophic phytoplankton proliferation along its southern coastline after a series of sea temperature spikes, which expanded across an extensive zone.
