At least 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
